Gates backs nukes
Very interesting TED video has gone up with Bill Gates talking about his investments in fission energy and how it's probably our best bet for an environmentally and economically friendly primary source of power. Very much worth a watch.

Also, I've been looking into getting a smartphone lately. The last time I had a genuinely modern phone was back in early 2005 with the now-venerable Nokia 6630. Things have changed a lot since then, and the idea of something running Android with some augmented reality apps is really very appealing. So far, the HTC Desire is the most attractive- while it may not be the physically sexiest phone, the 1GHz Snapdragon processor combined with Android 2.1 and the HTC Sense interface is a pretty attractive package. Anyone know of any comparable alternatives to consider?

Bill Gates evidently has some good points, which make up for the pain he causes me. ;-)

Heh, I view Windows as the lesser of three evils. Linux is great and all, but I'm nowhere near competent enough to use it to its full potential, and it's a pain in the arse getting games and peripherals working properly with it. OSX may look shiny and is starting to get a tolerable range of applications, but everything Apple is ridiculously overpriced, and only works well with their (also ridiculously overpriced) proprietary peripherals/programs. Windows certainly has its security flaws, and is hardly the most stable OS at the best of times, but it's got a good blend of features, interoperability and ease of use that makes it the most attractive OS for me.

Having said that, I would put in the effort to switch to Linux if modern games actually worked on it.

As I'm not really a gamer I have no need for Windows, so all it does is cause me problems when people insist upon using it and therefore require me to write software for them. As it happens I was just about to make a whinging complaint about that.

Re: Phone
Fuckin' sold. Been seeing rumours about the "HTC Supersonic" being unveiled, and this thing just looks awesome. Looks like it combines most of the features I want out of a smartphone, and then adds 4G to the deal. The kickstand and massive screen are nice touches, and being able to act as a hotspot for up to 8 devices is just insanely awesome. I just hope it comes out sometime soon.
