A change for the better

I have to admit that I quite like the idea of body modification, but at the moment it's still too new a practice to be worthwhile for me. Sure, people can do some cool things with their bodies, but very little of it is that useful yet. Adding a nose ring, some silicone horns or some scarification? Meh. Call me when there are LCD tattoos, implantable mobile phones and sub-dermal pockets. I really can't see it being worth the hassle, expense and discomfort of having one's body cut apart if there's no practical benefit.

One thing that did catch my eye was implantation of sub-dermal magnets on the finger tips, which allows one to sense magnetic fields, including those of electrical wires. Another thing that struck me as useful was a measurement tattoo. I'd have to get mine in millimetres, though, which would probably require getting a reasonably good tattoo artist if I want it done accurately.

It's look like crap after a while, and the tiny blowouts that happen even with very good artists would ruin it, unfortunately. It's hard doing miniscule linework :(

Would there be no way of setting the skin in place or something?

I suspect you've already read it Laurie, but I just have, and it was very interesting... Lots of tips on how to avoid Government surveillance, and a plausible scenario that could happen in Britain or the USA.

I haven't yet, no, but I enjoyed Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom hugely, and I'll be ordering Little Brother from Amazon just as soon as I'm done with my current pile of books (got Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom and Hayek's Road to Serfdom still to finish).

Wouldn't a measurement tattoo distort after a while, and not be accurate? Especially if you get it while you're still young and filling out (I'm guessing around 25 is the age that'll keep its shape for the longest, but of course there are loads of factors that could change shape). It'd mean you would have to be careful about your diet, so you don't loose or gain too much weight and stretch your skin.

Or you could get a scar or something over it that would heal up, adding another few millimetres to the total. Unlikely of course, but just pointing out there are lots of things that could screw it up if you get it tattooed. Perhaps future technology will have implants that'll keep their shape enough to be accurate, though.

That's probably the case. Perhaps getting it along the side of one's finger would work- I'm guessing that one's fingers don't change much in size, at least over a decade or two, and the skin's probably less prone to stretching due to weight gain/loss. Definitely worth waiting until at least 21 or so, though.
